| Three Nations |
| After the fall of
Ancient Joseon, agriculture was further developed based on the
bronze culture; consolidating the economic base. With such
development, many wars were waged by nations aspiring to expand
their reach, and industries clearly started to diversify.
Against this backdrop, the three nations of Goguryeo , Baekje ,
Silla were established. Goguryeo, which was founded in the first
century, brought numerous tribes under its control and was
centered around the Abnok River. In early 4th century, it drove
out Nakrang county and advanced into the Daedong River area. The
Baekje nation rose near the Han River, with the Wiryeseong at
its center. It secured systems for an ancient nation by the 3rd
century, and enjoyed political development. |
 |
| Meanwhile, Silla, which was established in
the Gyeongju plain, conquered the surrounding areas in the 4th
century and the King strengthened his grip on the area. Along
with these nations, Gaya was established on the lower Nakdong
River, but did not develop into a nation and was absorbed into
Silla in the 6th century. The three nations prospered while they
competed with each other; Goguryeo in particular, recorded
dramatic development. By the 5th century, Goguryeo developed
into a large nation, expanding to the Songhwa River to the
north, Asan Bay and Jungnyeong to the south. It also spanned
from the east coast to the Ryaoho River. It moved its capital
from small Guknaeseong to Pyeongyangseong; here they further
consolidated political and economic systems and developed a
distinctive culture. |
