United Silla
Development of the three nations was closely related to the changes of kingdoms in China. Silla joined hands with Tang Dynasty and toppled Baekje and Goguryeo. Then Silla formed an alliance with the drifting people from defeated Baekje and Goguryeo to drive the Tang out of the Korean Peninsula, achieving independent unification of the three nations. The unification in 676 brought remarkable advancement in the ancient society. In the Unified Silla, the king tightened his grip, political systems were further developed and the expanded nation was ruled effectively. Trade flourished in the nation, through active exchange with the Tang Dynasty.
Meanwhile, Balhae, which was established in Manchuria after the fall of Goguryeo, enjoyed unique cultural development after adopting a Confucianist political system between the 8th and 9th centuries. However, it was later conquered by the Khitan. Ever since, Manchuria has been lost in Korean history. Toward the end of the United Silla era, the power of the king weakened and provincial magnates strengthened their power. Eventually the nation was divided into three nations of Latter Goguryero, Baekjae and Silla.
