The Republic of Korea
In 1945, Koreans were liberated from 35 years of Japanese colonial rule. However, the liberation did not lead to a single independent country and the Korean Peninsula was divided into two parts. In August 1948, the first Korean government was launched with a presidential system. As a legitimate successor of the Korean history, it started off with a resolution to pursue democracy and develop the country.
However, the Korean War broke out in 1950 and the nation was divided into two parts. The war ended through signing of the armistice agreement, but the nation was divided in South and North Korea.
Ever since that point in time, South Korea has continuously developed democracy, and currently Participatory Government is in place.
Korea has been successful in its efforts to establish a democratic political system and to set up a capitalist industrial system. Korea is now seeking to develop into a welfare society. In pursuit of a diversified society, Koreans have developed and enjoy various types of pop culture.
